I love, love, love Amigo Joe's! My friends and I go here all the time and it's great for groups. They have the best margaritas (the ultimate margarita is only $5). The queso dip is delicious and everything is cheap! Even the free chips and salsa taste better than El Maguey or any other Mexican joint. I love the atmosphere too. Ask for Tony as your waiter!

Authentic food. You get your money's worth and their service is fast. They get crowded during weekend evenings though.

Delicious and cheap! Service could be quicker, but who comes here in a hurry?

Not bad. I recommend the Chimichanga with Grilled Chicken. The Margaritas are decent.

$15 dollars for lunch platters and 2 glasses of wine. Pretty epic. The chips were light, not overly greasy. The salsa bright and refreshing, only moderately spicy, however. Our waiter Luis was fast and attentive but had a bit of a language barrier with my father. Regardless, happy hour is all day Mon-Wed. (Side note: another thing we don't have in Boston is happy hour so this blows my mind and makes me uber jealous.) Go there, eat, drink and be merry for dirt cheap. The food was ok..good, even, but not Mexican that will change your life. I had the bean burrito and cheese enchilada (they came with the same sauce, my only complaint) and I almost ate the whole thing. pretty damn good.

Went for lunch with my sister, only 2 waiters for entire restaurant. ..we both ordered fajitas her the Texas, me chicken. ..plate came out barely warm with waaaay over cooked ,greasy onions and peppers which made up most of my fajitas. The few pieces of chicken (if thats what u call it) where slimy, disgusting undercooked pieces of I don't know what! Made me want to vomit just putting in mouth had to spit it out.. Both of ours were swimming in grease was just so disgusting...salsa was so watery wouldn't stay on chips. .I have been here few times before never been this bad..plus service non existent ...had to call my waiter over after sitting with empty glass for over 10 minutes when he walked passed several times.never came to ask how things were or if need anything. . ...went to pay and said food no good the cashier didn't say a word just rang me up ..big waste of money... stomach growling while writing this because I'm still hungry! If you go don't get fajitas and don't expect a drink refill!

A funny thing about Amigo Joe's, it's a Mexican restaurant but they have the BEST fried chicken I have ever had. It is far superior to Hodak's and any other chicken joint in St Louis. For $8.99 you get a half fried regular or Habenero with 2 sides and a slice of bread. It is juicy and tender with a delicious crispy skin. I was blown away when my boss brought it to us at work. I know you want to try something Mexican at a mexican restaurant but trust me, try this just once so you will know, when you do have the craving for fried chicken, this is the only place to go.

As a long-time regular, it pains me to say it, but Amigo Joe ain't my best Amigo any more. I'm afraid they've just seemingly gotten.. Well, lazy. Quality was never exactly "top notch," and you accordingly eat pretty cheap. But it just appears to have dwindled as of late. Maybe we just came to expect less, but a couple of recent trips to Mi Ranchito have opened my eyes as to where the bar lies. Especially in terms of fajitas. Then this past weekend we wanted to stay near home for a "no-frills" meal, and popped into Amigo Joe's. They were a little busy, but not crazy. I ordered the chicken fajitas, and noticed when they came out, they just didn't *look* like they typically do. I was fairly starved and by the time I had a few bites began to realize they also didn't taste quite right either. I gave them a sniff, and they had a bit of a "gas-like" odor to them.. Some cuts had a bit of a "gas-like" tinge to them - almost as if they were cooked with a lighter (this is not at all what I'm suggesting, just for the purpose of description). After about ten minutes, the waiter came around and asked how everything was. Since he asked, I decided to ask (nicely) how they typically cook their fajitas and proceeded to describe the strange flavor. He said he'd take them back to the kitchen and check with them. He returned and said the kitchen told him they didn't do anything any differently, but since I didn't like them he could take 50% off my fajitas. I appreciated this, and thanked him for the offer. But that said, I just hope they step things up again over there as I used to enjoy Amigo Joe's a good deal more.

My first time trying Amigo Joe's was my last. The food was mediocre; the refried beans were rather salty, the rice lacked flavor, and the carne asada in my chimichanga had literally no seasoning. On top of the lackluster food, the service was pretty bad. We ran out of chips and drinks and weren't checked on until our food was brought out. Overall, I'll be going to Mi Ranchito from now on.

OMG the fried chicken at this place is the bomb! Best fried chicken I've had in years, maybe even ever. I definitely recommend it if you're a fried chicken lover. They somehow managed to keep the breast meat really moist and juicy. The seasoning is flavorful and the skin is extra crispy. The choriqueso app is also delicious! Will be back for sure.

I loved the place. We showed up on a Friday at 7:00 PM with an unannounced party of 14 and they very happily accommodated us the best they could. I also think they have some of the best tortilla chips in STL. The staff was great, the food was great and I can't wait to go back. Authentic Mexican, maybe not but for American Mexican it's at the top of my list.

Wanted to like it so bad. It could be our cheaper more kid-friendly south city alternative to Pueblo Solis but when I saw the green paste guacamole, I knew it wouldn't be. Service was ok, not over the top friendly. Margaritas were also ok, not too sweet or mix heavy. And food was fair. They do have lots of options on the menu and plenty of seating. They are kid-friendly in that they have high chairs. If they have a kids menu we didn't see it. I say good place to gather with friends but not your go to Mexican eatery.

i had a special deal for 1 appetizer, 2 entrees and 2 ultimate margueritas. we were both sick the next day. the only food/drink we had in commom were the margueritas, which i doubt made us sick, and the chips and salsa, and a little of the beef and bean nachos appetizer. once we had the two ultimate marguerita's, i would have expected a good waiter to tell us if we wanted another, mon.-wed. the normal ones are only $2.25. he did not. definitely affected his tip. doubt i'll go back, tho the menu prices seemed reasonable.

Amigo Joes is a super bright fun Mexican place. We really liked the patio (too chilly to sit this visit) , atmosphere, chips & salsa and .. THE FRIED CHICKEN! Yep .. never thought I would order fried chicken from a Mexican place, but it sounded too good not to on the specials list. I tried the Pollo Habenaro. Its a spicy fried chicken served with rice and beans. SO MUCH FOOD for $7.25. the beans were Ok and the rice- I'll pass on. They did offer an Original style fried chicken with traditional side options too. We will for sure go back.

Love, love, love this place!! Best mexican food I've found in STL yet. It has a great atmosphere - I feel like I'm in Mexico, on a vacation when I go there! My boyfriend and I go here all the time. The people are friendly, the place is clean, awesome patio, AWESOME special margarita, fantastic food, great prices - what more can you ask for?!

went here for the first time - food was great. The waiter we had was really good - took our 2 yr old granddaughter and he was very attentive to her. Did not have to wait for a table. Would recommend this place to anyone

Loved this place!! Great, fast service. The food is SO good and very reasonable. I also LOVE their chips. I got the shrimp fajitas and there were tons of shrimp. This was our first visit but we will definitely be returning.

Amigo Joe's is great value for your dollar- huge margaritas and plenty of chips and salsa. The carne asada made with ribeye are tender and tasty. But don't order the chiles rellenos- they aren't the fried kind you think they are. And anything with ground beef tastes gross to me there. Go for the high dollar entrees (which are still mostly under $10) and you will be satisfied. Service is very prompt and good- our friend got a glass of wine that was short-poured and didn't complain, but the server came back and said "that one was a short pour so I'll only charge you for one glass instead of two." My husband thought these people were from Texas, where he's from- it's a classic tex-mex menu.

After my first stop at Amigo Joe's, I went back two more times in the same week. Instead of happy hours, they have happy days! Margaritas and imports are only $2 and their cheese dip is liquid fire. Go there.

Good cheap food, cheap drinks, & friendly staff is what I usually find at Amigo Joes. I'm partial to the mushroom quesdilla or the burrito el camino (a lot of meat and cheese, not sure how it relates to an el camino though). Hearty portions, if you order a margarita be prepared for a stiff drink. All in and all a Amigo Joes has a relaxed atmosphere, good food and good drinks at a reasonable price not much more needed.

Ok - wow, I'm still in shock. A group of us (about 15) gathered at Amigo Joe's because my son and daughter-in-law came into town. We called in advance and told them we would have about 20 people coming for dinner (on a Tuesday) at 6:30 for dinner and drinks. The waiter was horrible. He seemed overwhelmed. Our waiter actually said he would rather our entire group leave because he couldn't handle it. We asked for the manager and he too suggested we leave because the restaurant couldn't handle such a big group (why not give us two waiters or the manager help our waiter?) We called in advance and gave a number of 20 and we were a group of 15. No, we were not obnoxious. We were not drunk (1/2 of our group doesn't drink alcohol). We in fact were very polite and willing to be patient. We will NEVER go to this restaurant again. One third of our group drove all the way from St. Charles. What a calamity!

I realistically don't know anything about this place except for the fried chicken. You can probably just read Jon T.'s review for a better description as I think he has been multiple times. I will start by saying that I am not "fried chicken powered" like some people in my family. I feel like they crave it, go out of their way to get it, etc, whereas I'm not likely to order it if presented with other items on the menu. It's not that I don't like it, but it's usually not my go to. But then I will say that this is the best I've ever had, hands down. The meat is salty, the habanero option has great seasoning and heat, and they are doing a brisk business in chicken, so your order is going to come out so hot it's almost glowing - fresh and juicy, even the white meat. Everything you want in fried chicken is here. Ignore how silly it feels to go to a Mexican restaurant for fried chicken and just do it. If you love or even just like fried chicken, this is absolutely worth a drive from practically anywhere in the St. Louis area. Obviously, the place has become known for the chicken. So there might be a line on the weekend, and then you might wait for you food. Just settle in, it'll be worth it.

As a party of one, they put me at a two top (understandably) that was tucked around a corner and as the only table/guest in that vicinity, I was promptly forgotten about. To the credit of the staff, when I FINALLY got the attention of a number of employees passing by, they immediately took care of me and seemed truly apologetic for the oversight. The gentleman whose attention I initially grabbed even stopped back by later to make sure I was doing alright. The food, though? Subpar at best. Presentation certainly wasn't a factor as it looked slapped on my plate and almost like it came out of a frozen dinner. Also, the red sauce in my chicken enchilada tasted strongly of sugar and, while I admit my ignorance that it may in fact be a key ingredient, it was overwhelmingly sweet and almost reminded me of something out of a can. Granted, the chips and salsa were very good but that's hardly a dinner. I won't be back.

All the post about the fried chicken is spot on. I got 1 breast, 2 wings and 1 leg for less than $10. And the spice is good. That's the good, but the bad out weighs it. The mashed potatoes were cold almost like ice cream cold. The salsa is runny seems to be an after thought. The server is no where to be found. I went 10 minutes without a refill on my drink. That was rough when the spice kicked in on the chicken. The manger took care of the meal for me and apologized about the ice cold mashed potatoes. And about the server not being around, he is pulling triple duty. She asked me to come back and I will. Stay tuned for round 2.

The habanero fried chicken here is amazing and exceptional. I will return to this restaurant over and over for their chicken. It's really the only thing I order. The other menu items that I've sampled off of my wife's plate were kind of blah. I usually judge a Mexican restaurant by their rice and refried beans; the rice and refried beans here are pretty unspectacular. That being said, if you come for the chicken, it totally lives up to the hype. Order the chicken.

In preparation for Bro J and T coming to visit in May, we made a scouting trip to Amigo Joe's to re-visit the fried chicken. Ms T and Ms D really enjoyed it about six months ago and we wanted to see if it is consistent. Wow, it is. I will probably never go to Amigo Joe's for Mexican food, although the pork carne verde I had on our first visit was pretty good. I just would not drive all the way in from Chesterworld for that when I can get the best guisado de puerco anywhere at Mi Lupita. However, I will drive in to Amigo Joe's for the fried chicken if it stays like the first two times. My rating is for the chicken, the whole chicken and nothing but the chicken. Five stars. It is brined, so salted through. It is well seasoned with pepper and the habanero version can be fairly spicy. It is cooked to order, so comes out piping hot, fresh, crispy and juicy throughout. They know how to split the breast so it fries in the same time as the thigh/leg and does not dry out. There is pretty much nothing to fault. If I am allowed to pick, as a very personal preference, I would like less coating, but Ms T likes this. It is not a big issue. The sides are not profound, but why worry about it. I get mashed potatoes and gravy (this time the gravy was more plentiful and the potatoes were hot) and the green beans are not bad, just canned ones, but with a lot of black pepper. The kicker is, this is half a chicken for $9. We each ate about half of our meal and when we were finishing eating and asked for a box, the remaining chicken was still hot. This is an ordinary Mexican restaurant that has fried chicken nailed. You just would not expect it. I would not have known to try it were it not for reading some other Yelp reviews. We will probably try fried chicken at some other places. We might find some we like as well, but I seriously doubt we can find any better. I can say categorically that it puts Porter's, King Edward's and Hodak's to shame and their's is OK. Forget Sweetie Pie's, what I had there did not have any spices or salt at all. Ms T does not want to look farther. But it is still fun to look when you have a go-to place you can count on. Five stars for the chicken only in a 2 star Mex place. Oh and that's five star chicken and AAdvantage dining miles. 5/24/2015 - Follow Up - We did return with Bro J and T as well as Andrew T. We were not disappointed. Four orders of chicken and one of the chile verde did not go to waste. The chicken was again perfect, hot, fresh and juicy.

I'd had my heart set on spicy fried chicken from another place that unfortunately is not open for dinner, but a friend suggested Amigo Joe's. Easy to find and lots of parking. It was some of the best (if not #1) fried chicken I've ever had. Perfect level of spicy and not oily. Half a bird plus 2 sides for under $10! I didn't even touch the sides because the chicken was that good. Our server was very friendly, drinks were good, and I personally liked the decor. Cannot wait to go back!! I hear their Happy Hour specials are top notch too. Do not pass up trying the chicken!!

My girlfriend and I come here quite often, and this is the first time the service and food was not good. The server left our dirty dishes on our table the entire time we were here. Our jalapeño poppers were actually cold and not cooked. The bean dip was 1/2 the size it usually is. And also our server "Kevin" payed more attention to what I assume were friends, than his other tables. Definitely not the best meal we have had here.

I visited Amigo Joe's after not being there for about a year. My favorite thing about the restaurant previously was the cheap prices. Well, the prices have gone up a bit and the amount of food they give you in some dishes has gone down, which is a total bummer. The amount of items they have on the menu has literally doubled, which is pretty cool. However, I like to stick with what I know. I usually get a shrimp quesadilla, it used to be packed with shrimp - like 6 pieces - and this time it literally came with 3 pieces. HALF of what it used to be, but still the same price. Wasn't too happy about that. Queso dip is now $3. While that doesn't seem like a high price, when you're used to getting a burrito there for about $5, it is. Servers are still nice - had a great experience both times I visited this week, I was just a bit disappointed in some of the changes. It's still a great place to visit.

Mexican on the hill. Complimentary chips & salsa were fresh. Service was friendly & fast! I had the pick 3, 2 enchiladas, 1 quesadilla. Most entrées under $10. Take credit cards. Will dine here again.

Another fantastic meal at Amigo Joes! My bf had never had their habanero fried chicken and now he may never have fried chicken any other way. Juicy chicken with well-spiced, crispy breading. I had a couple bites and wanted more but I can't take the heat. I had a lobster quesadilla made with real lobster, yum! They also offer lobster enchiladas which I've heard are tasty too. Washed all of that down with a pitcher of potent margaritas. We also enjoyed their chips and salsa, which was not spicy so I was able to have a lot. Split a Xango for dessert. Four delectable little cheesecake chimichangas with honey and chocolate syrup drizzled over them served with ice cream, whip cream and sprinkles :9

The best taste of Mexico! I had the Mega Alambre and my wife had the Lobster Quesadilla. Both were the best Mexican entrees we've ever had! I can't recommend this place high enough, and it's within a couple blocks of our house. We can't wait to come back!!

Amigo Joe's is one of the best Mexican restaurants in the St. Louis area. The prices are very reasonable, the portions are more than enough, and the wait staff is very friendly. I have to admit that my first experience here was not the best. I ordered their chicken quesadilla due to not feeling very adventurous and it was less than sub par so I would definitely NOT order that. Every other experience I've had here has been excellent. The margaritas are delicious, the complimentary chips and salsa are always fresh and the entrees are usually between 4-9 dollars. My absolute favorite entrée is the Tacos Al Pastor and if I'm not too hungry I usually get the grilled chicken nachos.

This is crazy but Amigo Joe's makes some of the best fried chicken in the STL area! Honestly if I based my rating just on the chicken I would give it five stars. The only reason I'm not is their actual (American) Mexican food is only worth 3 1/2 stars and that is pushing it. The salsa is like ketchup.

Came here to try the fried chicken. My girlfriend got the vegetarian quesadilla. The quesadilla was good -- it's hard to mess that up. The fried chicken was the real standout here though. All the awesome reviews on it were correct. I went with the habanero half fried chicken. It has the perfect level of spicyness, and the breading is spot on. It's airy, and the chicken is definitely brined, as it is nice and salty -- it is a shame when fried chicken only has flavor in the breading. Additionally, it's only like $8.99 for a half of a chicken and comes with two sides. It competes, for me, right alongside Porter's. The chips are nice and thin, but the salsa is truly lacking. I feel like it's just a can of Pace. That's the only drawback, but I don't consider the quality of free appetizers to be a big deal.

So I went on my hour break from work thinking that since its right down the road from where I work I literally could walk there and get back to work in time after dinner. Also this place wasn't as packed as it definitely could have been wonder how things go on a busy night. I was told the kitchen was backed up once and left alone no refills no nothing no waitress returned to the table till I flagged her down which while doing so she tried to run back into the back acting like she didn't see me. This was my first and last time I will be going here I never got my food so I left seeing as I had to go back to work. If you can serve people especially Mexican food within an hour don't be in business what a joke!

I have been coming here ever since I moved to the Hill. Given all of the Italian restaurants around, it is nice to have a Mexican restaurant nearby. In terms of food, it is just OK. They have a wide selection and it is pretty cheap, but nothing super amazing. I typically get the chicken tacos, which I always enjoy. What I really like about Amigo Joe's is they have tons of drinks (e.g., margaritas, daiquiris) both served on the rocks and frozen for ridiculously cheap. For example, on Mondays they have 12 oz margaritas for $1.00 with the purchase of an entree. I typically get a 27 oz peach mango margarita (which is only 7.75 all the time). I've always found their servers pleasant and attentive (even when they seem short-staffed). Overall, a great place to grab a drink. I keep hearing great things about the fried chicken so I'll have to try that out some time soon.

I finally got to the place where all my friends are always checking in because they swear by the food ... and now we're fans too! Very easy to find, its a very colorful building that has great outside, and inside seating options. We chose inside this particular day and were seated immediately. Out came chips and salsa once we ordered our drinks and they were delish. They have awesome prices on their lunch time specials so we got fajitas and chicken chimichangas. Very filling and very good! They seem to have some awesome drink specials for happy hour so I hope to get back soon to try their margaritas. The staff was friendly and the ambiance is good, especially with the background music. They didn't always check in on us but you could easily find your person to flag them down. We got the refills we needed when we needed them. Can't wait to visit again!

This is really more a review about the Amigo Joe's fried chicken, and more specifically, the habanero fried chicken. Unless you know to look for it, it's easy to miss this. They don't give it much fanfare, and the first time in, I didn't even see it on the menu--friends of mine had gone, swore that it was life-altering in a good way, so I just blindly agreed. I think this makes it all the more appealing, the unheralded nature of it and the 8.5x11 sheet of paper with a crudely rendered clipart chicken announcing it in the corner of the bar. I'm not sure what, exactly, makes this so special. That it's pressure-cooked isn't anything new, that seems surprisingly common. When it comes to you, it arrives quietly and unassuming, and it looks...well, it looks better than KFC, it's not nearly as contrived, but there's nothing to suggest the magic which is to come. Steam pours off of it with controlled fury, and when you cut into it, a delightful aroma wafts over you. It's got heat. While a habanero isn't the hottest of peppers, it's hotter than what I'm usually okay with, but mixed into this batter it's not about the heat as much as it is about the flavor. It's subtle yet powerful, memorable. The meat is juicy, imbued with just enough flavor and just enough salt. There's a depth of flavor here in a dish that's usually about little more than immediate gratification. And it stays piping hot for a long, long time. We've gotten to the point that we try to drag the experience out for as long as possible so that we're not rifling through it, and even towards the final pieces, the temperature remains intense. It's at least a 20-minute wait for the chicken to come to you, which only enhances the savory anticipation. It improves the experience. That it's $9 is somewhere between amazing and unbelievable, but it's true, and it's mind-boggling in a city that due to a serious lack of credible food journalism has new restaurants believing every last press-clipping and indulging in bizarrely high prices consequently. That alone makes Amigo Joe's a breath of fresh air: it's not courting the b.j. press coverage, it's just about serving killer fried chicken, and at a reasonable price. The sides are simple but appropriate, and the combination of their cheap top-shelf (seriously! It's good tequila) margaritas is wonderful. Best fried chicken I've had, and I've had some great fried chicken in the south and beyond, and a dynamite experience overall.

Delicious 4 flavor fajitas, always friendly service, a great deal on week days for $1 margaritas with an entrée, and they are never short on their pour of tequila. Spacious and always busy on the weekends. A great spot to stop when you want a heaping pile of meat and veggies!

Delicious and affordable. My daughter doesn't like spicy food so she ordered the fried chicken. Wow was it good! I think it was the best restaurant fried chicken that I've ever had! I'm coming back for the spicy (habanero) version of the fried chicken soon. I had the Alambre. I'd never heard of this dish before. It was like a chunky queso dip or cheesy hash. In addition to the cheese sauce, ingredients included grilled beef, bacon, catfish, jalapeños, and onions. I ate it with flour tortillas and tried it on chips. It was also very tasty. Service was friendly, prompt, and knowledgeable.

I've never given a 5 star rating yet, but Amigo Joes is worthy of a 6th star. While I've been here on numerous occasions, I hadn't been privy to the secret fried chicken experience. Because who goes to eat Mexican and orders fried chicken? I saw a server walking by with a mountain of this glorious fried bird and asked what it was as I thought my eyes were deceiving me. They said that they had regular and a spicy chicken, so I decided to forgo my usual ole' and take the plunge. Now this isn't for the faint at heart... There's a 20 minute wait and after one bite I may wait hours for this stuff. First of all for around $8 you get 4 pieces of chicken and 2 sides. That's way more than I can put down in one sitting so I saved the rest for the next day. The chicken was beyond what my expectations were. It was moist, well seasoned, not greasy and hit the spot!! I had the rest of it cold the following day and again, it was worthy of a Mexican hat dance. Glad the secret is out, hands down... BEST fried chicken I've ever had. Gracias Amigo Joe's!!!

This is the second time I've been here within the past two months. I love authentic Mexican food and for people who don't like authentic and mainly just fried chicken from what I read on the other reviews this is the place for you. But this isn't for authentic lovers or for people who like good margaritas. I got the Carne a sad a , the steak was burnt and flavorless. The time before I had a combination plate with a tamale a taco and a enchilada all of which were dry and flavorless but drenched in lettuce and cheese that tasted like provel. The service was bad both times it was slow and rude. I work at 2 restaurants myself and this was terrible. If you don't like people don't work in a restaurant, work in retail.

This is the second mexican restaurant we've tried off Hampton and it's much better than the first (El Tapatios= thumbs down). The food just tastes better, especially the salsa. If you have crappy salsa then you're setting up the rest of the meal for disappointment. The prices are cheap and the menu is large. I usually get some form of burrito and have plenty of leftovers. The servers are friendly and the interior is cheerful- each wall is a different color of the rainbow.

Amigo Joe's is a colorful American Style Mexican restaurant on The Hill. While I've had some great meals and fun nights over pitchers of margaritas, I think I'm done. Every time the experience is different. There is no consistency (except for the lack of attention by the servers). This past weekend, the chicken tacos were not awesome. They tasted like they were marinated in tomato paste with no spices or flavors. We waited 40+ minutes for two tacos and two burritos and 20 minutes for a water refill. Requests for extras (sour cream)were made but never delivered. Lastly, the meal ended coming back up at the end of the night. If based off this one experience today only, I would have given it one star, but since I've been here before and was fine, I'll give it two stars for previous experiences. After 5+ previous visits, I think I'm done.

Food was typical for your St. Louis Mexican restaurant. Portions are large. Beers are even bigger and cheap. Service was good. It's a good stop if you are famished and want a large cheap Mexican meal.

I come here often, and am usually happy with everything, but last night was the exception. My man and I split an order of Texas fajitas with a pitcher of house margaritas. It took at least 10 minutes before anyone took our order and in the meantime we are sitting at the table without even water. No water no chips or salsa... For 10 minutes. When our food finally did arrive we got the wrong type of tortillas and it took an additional 10 minutes to track down our server, tell her about the mix up, and receive the tortillas we ordered. The fajitas were also extremely oily. Oh AND the margaritas had TABLE SALT on the rim. Absolutely atrocious. This place is affordable and a neighborhood favorite, but the last few times I've been there I've been disappointed. They seem to not really care about their customer service anymore.

Fried chicken at a Mexican restaurant? Whaaa? Amigo Joes is a pretty standard Mexican place with a colorful interior. So why are there signs everywhere pushing the fried chicken? I'm not quite sure, but I went for it. For 8 bucks, you can get a half-chicken (wing, breast, thigh, leg) along with a side and a piece of white bread. They have regular or habanero (spicy). I chose the habanero fried chicken with a side of rice and beans. I was told it would take about 20 minutes, which was a good sign that they cook it to order. It was pretty damn good! The spice was all in the breading, which there was a lot of. The chicken could have been a bit juicier. The heat in the breading was the perfect amount, enough to keep it interesting but not overwhelming. I wouldn't say this tops Porters chicken, but it's still pretty solid. The chips and salsa are really good here, and other people enjoyed their Mexican entrees. Also, it wasn't too crowded on a Saturday night, our party of 5 was seated right away. If you're in the area and want some decent grub at a good price, check it out.

Four of us went there yesterday to try the Fried Chicken, we were disappointed that they were out of the spicy chicken, but we went with the regular style. 10 minutes after ordering, four huge portions of chicken arrived at our table. It was hot, tender, juicy and very tasty. My new local favorite chicken place, although still slightly behind Gus's Fried Chicken in Memphis, but that could change when I go back for the spicy!

Decent food, but tortillas not being fresh at a mexican Restaurant is just a deal breaker. Salsa was more like ketchup. Texas fajitas were pretty good.

If you wan't truly vegetarian food, don't eat here. Let's start with the good. The chips and salsa were delicious! Chips were thin and crispy, while the salsa was flavorful but not spicy. The patio had a nice ambiance. I ordered off the "vegetarian" menu, a cheese quesadilla and a bean burrito. I took one bite of my burrito and gagged. The refried beans that they used clearly weren't vegetarian as it tasted like a mouth full of meat, yuck! Crazy me expected my vegetarian order to actually be vegetarian. We spoke with the manager on our way out, and the manager seemed very indifferent about it.

Can't go wrong with Amigo Joe's or Mi Ranchito. I give Ranchito a slight edge on food, but Amigo Joe's is a bit cheaper and has the better margarita specials. The $5 ultimate margarita is awesome - tastier and more potent than the basic grita. I eat at Amigo Joe's a lot, and the only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is that the menu is a little hit and miss. Stick with dishes like the Carnitas, Chori Polo, Fajitas, Burrito California, Shrimp Soup, and the Chile Verde. The combo plates are nothing to write home about.

Good food. Good service. Fun atmosphere! The atmosphere kind of reminds me of PeeWee Herman's Play House. It is eccentric, ecletic, and fanticiful. It's adorned with brightly colored walls and twinkle lights galore. If you are in the neighborhood and in the mood for Mexican (not Italian) you should stop and grab a bite here. It measures up with the best of the authentic Mexican restaurants in St. Louis.

This place is my absolute favorite for Mexican food, however if you are coming here on a weekend expect slow service and wrong orders. BUT don't get discouraged they'll get it right and you will leave full and happy. I will be back!

Solidly three stars--good, not great. The chips and salsa were good (I had high expectations after reading some of the other reviews, but found them to be pretty standard). I had the grilled chicken tacos, which were also fine. The chicken was really juicy, but I wasn't the biggest fan of the cheese. The best part was that if you order an entree, you are eligible for happy hour pricing. $2.25 margaritas--woohoo! For that price, I was expecting something watered down and sickeningly sour, but they weren't! Maybe not the best margarita I've ever had, but definitely worth two buck!

I can't wrap my head around why everyone loves this place. I live in the area and you can pretty much spit and hit a Mexican Restaurant, so we have options. Amigo Joe's is my least favorite around...and I LOVE Chimichangas, so I have no idea how Chimi's can be so good and Joe's not so much. I've dined here several times - indoors and out. I love me a good, strong drink - don't get me wrong - but the margaritas on more than one occasion have been so extremely strong that I literally had to choke them down. More bang for your buck, indeed, but let's not barf in our combo platter, shall we? Every combo I've ordered has just been primary variations of stuff filled with ground beef. Flavorless ground beef. And, if you want a good laugh, get the chili relleno - it's literally like melted cheese on a plate, barely a chili to be found. Cleanliness is not their strong point, either. The silverware always needs a wiping and it's always mangled. My tip: Eat inside and the bright lights will avert your eyes from such things. I know this less-than-favorable review won't hurt their business because it's always booming, but with all the other options so close, this will be a place I skip from now on.

I have to say that the last couple visits have not blown me away. The staff is friendly and the food is ok, but certainly not exceptional. My steak tacos had random gristle scattered through-out that should have been caught by the cook. And I don't know how I could have drank a margarita the size of the one I had without even feeling a little bit buzzed. Out of fairness, I have to say that their fried chicken is awesome. Overall, there are so many Mexican options that are good. I am afraid this has become a choice of convenience more than a dining destination.

Only the chips and salsa are edible. This place is awful. I can't believe people think this is good Mexican food! Worst Mexican food I have ever eaten. Taco Bell is superior (and cheaper).

At first I was happy to find out that Amigo Joe's is owned by the same peeps as Chimi's because Chimi's is a great spot for ritas and bean dip on a summer afternoon when you can't think of anything better to do than to stop into a psychedelic urban taco oasis. So, headed into AJ's I was expecting to get that same feeling of fun kitsch you get when you go to Chimi's. But, after I was there, I realized that there should really only be one Chimi's..not two, esp not one on the hill. It just doesn't fit. On Grand, Chimi's just makes you happy after driving past dejection for awhile, but on the hill AJ's just feels like...yeah whatever. I don't know if the $5 rita is at Chimi's but at AJ's it was pretty good, with a nice amount of tequila in it, and having two was just enough. I did order something I've never gotten at Chimi's, the chicken chimichanga..which you shouldn't get because it was all chimi and not enuf changa if you know what I mean. I give AJ's three stars only because of my love for Chimi's aesthetic. But personally, I'll save my mexi treats for the original.

My daughter has been hyping this place up to me for a while, but seriously she is 9, what in the hell does she know about good food? My wife also went here for Cinco De Mayo and after two super margarita's, had to basically be carried upstairs. So everyone in my house loves this place.. Anyway, I digress..... Here are the positives: 1. Incredibly cheap kids menu. $2.75 for each plate of food. 2. Quick service and attentive 3. Great tortilla's 4. Good salsa Negatives 1. Wasn't crazy about the steak for the fajitas. way too many green peppers and onions in the mix for my taste and too little steak that wasn't really good 2. I asked for extra cheese to be served with the fajitas. Not only did they not bring shredded cheese to accompany my meal, but when I asked my server, he brought me a cheese queso bowl melted and then gave me a 2.99 upcharge. 3. Here is a scam I hate at all Mexican restaurants....HOW DO YOU EXPECT ME TO EAT THIS ENTIRE TWO PLATES OF FOOD WITH 3 TORTILLA's? No one can do this. So they add in the extra dollar upcharge to bring 3 more over. 4. So lets break this down.....The steak fajitas you really are advertising for 9.99, with sales tax is coming to $15 bucks. Anybody who reads my reviews knows that i am the least cheap person in the city, my complaint here is strictly on principle. I love Chuey's, but they are probably pricier and do the same shit. Anyway, maybe I am just in a bad mood this morning and being a pain in the ass.

I started coming to Amigo Joe's about a year or so ago. and without a doubt they are definitely high on my favorites list. I have been here many times since I started and I have yet to have a bad experience. The menu is full of tasty dishes, I tend to stick with the combinations but I need to expand the horizons and try some of their specialty dishes. The ambiance of the place is awesome, its alive and jumping. the wait staff is courteous and I have been very pleased with my experiences with them. I am not a drinker but they have some killer margaritas here, I have been at the restaurant many times when I was extremely busy and still was sat within a reasonable time frame and even though the wait staff was busy they stll managed to serve all their tables in a timely fashionable order which is one of the reasons why I keep returning to this establishment. Do yourself a favor and try them out, I've yet to be disappointed...

I came down to the hill to help out a friend and he bought me late lunch. Because he is self-employed contractor, I was herding a cat and we got there it was 3:02. The $5+ lunch specials stop at 3, but they had specials between $6-7 (oh well he was buying). The place was brightly decorated and very nice, but empty on this Friday. We decided to split Texas (chicken, beef and some shrimp) fajitas double order (the cost was $17 or 8.50 a piece and we both took home another meal and we are hungry guys). The free salsa actually had a few chunks of onions and more flavor overall than most free salsas, but still not great just great for free. The chips had that good thin crisp texture I like (vs. cheap thick or "stone ground" corn chips). The waiter gave me an extra water without ice when I told him I get thirsty fast (good service). The guy arrived with our main course so fast we only went through one thing of salsa. The pan was sizzling with nicely cooked chicken, beef, shrimp, onion, peppers and tomatos. The food was not just doubled on shared plates, but two actual separate orders. I admit I hate this guy like a brother and did want my own plates and leftovers to take home even though he was paying. There was little seasoning on the meat, but I would expect that at Americanized Mexican restaurant. (I lived for a summer in Yuma and one of my friends married a woman from Mexico so... BUT for a StL restaurant I liked it.) I did find a pepper sauce "Valentina" that added very good flavor, but with little heat to add to the fajitas. I need to start asking for sauces or seasoning to add faster at these places. Overall I became an instant fan because of great service, value and better free salsa than most "Mexican" places.

Yeah, I am here once or twice a week. Love it. It's not THE BEST Mexican in town but it is tasty and very fast service with nice portions. They have good margaritas and a huge menu, some vegan options, decent service, etc. I will go to other Mexican places if friends go but this is where I usually end up. And yes, the decor is insane, it looks like a llama ate some bright crayons and then barfed all over the walls, but don't let that stop you. :)

The food is good and cheap but it isn't the best by far. FYI, don't use your debit or credit card because they'll over charge it. It's happened to me and I can't figure out if the waiter tried to tip himself more or what. I was pissed and it took 2 weeks to get in touch with a manager and get my money back. Never going back!

I love Mexican food and margaritas, and Amigo Joes knows how it's done. The food is flavorful and delicious, the service is nice and friendly, and the food takes literally no time to come out of the kitchen nice and hot. The margaritas are huge, cheap, and amazing! And the chips they put in the table are fresh and never ending! The salsa is my favorite, too. I cannot say enough great things about this place. We took two of our friends there and they're now addicted too!

Chimichanga's on The Hill? Oh, yeah! South City dwellers have long been spoiled by cheap margaritas, beautiful stained glass windows, tacky fences dawned with Christmas lights, and hot, fast Mexican food. Now The Hill neighborhood has a Chimichanga's of their own! Yes, Chimichanga's owner has opened another location. Different name, same menu, same staff, and same indoor decor/theme. The new location doesn't have an outdoor area yet, but they do have an indoor bar, something the South Grand location has needed for a long time. The margarita's are pre-made and not great, but they are OK and they are only $2 on Wednesdays. The pitchers are CHEAP. The food is American-friendly, but still authentic. Try the nachos with shredded beef for a $1 up-charge and you and a date can fill up for a little over $7 bucks. The chips are hot & flaky and the white queso fundido is rich and yummy! I personally go basic with the shredded chicken taco salad. Mainly because it's cheap (under $5), somewhat healthy (if you don't eat the shell), and a large amount of food. The chicken is stewed with bell peppers and onion, it has lettuce, tomato, queso fundido and shredded fresco blanco on top. Amigo Joe's is located on SW Avenue, a block east of Hampton and across the street from longtime local favorite, Mr. B's. It is not the best Mexican restaurant in town, but like Chimichanga's it has the whole package, factoring in the price for the experience. Good, hot, food fast and fun, low-key atmosphere all for a very low price.

Don't like to judge a place until I've been there twice. I remember not being impressed the first time but we decided to try Amigo Joes a second time. Not only was the food only mediocre but the service was horrible. As we were finishing our dinner and drinks we were told it was last call. Before we finished another staff member came to the table to tell us we had a few minutes to finish! Then just a few minutes later a group of the staff all came and stood in our dining room just watching us. We and the other table we talked to were offended by this behavior. We felt rushed and uncomfortable we will definitely won't be going back.

My roommate and I went here for dinner one Sunday night because we had a coupon and it's less than 5 minutes from our apt. Our waitress was nice and attentive. I liked the salsa, it was slightly chunky and slightly spicy with good flavor, and the chips were decent. I got the fish tacos, they were a little more 'fishy' smelling than I would have liked, but I enjoyed them nonetheless. The rice and beans were typical but okay. The decor is super cheesy Mexican but I enjoy that. The only downside was that because we had to pay up front at the register, we had to wait a while due to a couple people in front of us. I would go back when craving decently priced, typical tex-mex.

I think this place is great. It's cheap, pretty consistent and you can get out of there in less than an hour. I would say their menu is pretty Americanized-huge portions, and some menu items are a little bland. I always stick with the fajitas and I've never been disappointed. The standout: the chips and salsa and their margs. Be aware that the decor is super cheesy, but I love that about the place!

Went back to Amigo Joe's but it wasn't actually Amigo Joe's I went to but right next door to Amigo Joe's Chicken. They have ABSOLUTELY GREAT Fried chicken here. I thought I was in for a 20-30 minute wait when I got there, nope! Walked right in, told the guy at the counter what I wanted and walked out all in under 5 minutes. Got the grub home and started to dig in while watching CBC fall to Francis Howell in Hockey last night so this acted as a little comfort food for that. The place does the same box deal where you have the regular (their choice) or the special (your choice). Each box comes with a roll and two sides. They have several different sides but I went with the Green Beans and, of course, Mashed Potatoes. The green beans were excellent and warm. All they needed was a bit of bacon and some onion and they would have reminded me of the ones my grandmother used to make. They were very peppery so if you don't like pepper in your green beans, shame on you. This time I got two legs and two thighs. AWESOME!!! So digging right in the meat just fell off the bone. The breading was amazing and had a slight kick to it and it tasted awesome. It was a little damp and not as crispy as other places but that was probably because I had to wait a bit to eat it. Now, onto the mashed potatoes. As I opened the canister I had flash backs of my Porter's experience since it was the same container. This, however, was filled to the brim with probably the best tasting fake potatoes I've ever had. I put a little bit of their brown gravy on top and then inhaled the rest. I will definitely be hitting this place up again since it is so close to my place. Can't wait!

Amigo Joe's is the best Mexican food I have found in a long time. The food is definitely worthy of five stars, but the service is VERY slow. I have been twice this week and both times, we waited for drink refills and the check. Our waiter didn't even bring our food tonight, an assistant did. It took several minutes longer for the waiter to come check and refill our glasses. If they fix the service issues, this would be a 5 star rating. Unfortunately for customers, the food is so good, we tolerate the slower service.

Finally...a restaurant opened in this interesting looking building that has been shuttered for the past 5 years. Went on recommendation of friend who knew I loved Chimichanga's. Nice, new and fresh decor. Carne asada was a little bit saltier than I'd expect (versus seasoned), so I will try chicken next time, which my wife said was great. Otherwise, fast, tasty, cheap. They finished the outdoor patio and it looks very nice, so now it is complete. Will go back, I'm sure.

Update: If anyone was thinking of trying the "chicken shack" at Amigo Joe's they do not hold regular business hours. It is open 11am-1pm, closes then reopens from 4:30pm - 9pm. Just a little tidbit. If you are like me you detest wasted trips.

This is a really solid little place and relatively new to the area. Awesome patio, huge menu with a million options, great salsa, and margaritas that will make you forget that you went to dinner there. Im not going to say its the best Mexican restaurant in the world or anything but with the exception of the random bad meal, I cant see anyone going here and not liking it. We always have a great time.

This place seriously looks like an 8 year old got to pick the colors and all they had were highlighters with the architect/interior designer. It makes me think that this place should be on a beach somewhere the only thing is this place doesn't have any sand on the floor. The good.... service. Very fast, very attentive. Prices.... decently cheap and happy hour all day Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. That's what I'm talking about.... and the portions are redonkulous The bad/not so good..... The food. To quote the future Mrs. Rick S "it's just like any other crappy Mexican food place. Definitely nothing to write home about." Want cheap drinks and a time to feel like you should be on a beach? Go here.... you want some great Mexican food.... check elsewhere.

Of the handful of things that separate Amigo Joe's from other so-so Mexican joints around town, the first one you'll probably notice is the décor. The walls here are so neon that they seem to glow, and they are adorned with no shortage of gaudy trinkets and artwork. If you've ever wondered what it would be like to dine in the middle of a miniature golf course, this is your chance to find out. That festive vibe carries over to the menu, which looks like a travel brochure for Cabo San Lucas and features every conceivable Mexicombo dish you can imagine. My gringos and I sampled the queso fundido and tried a smattering of entrees from various corners of the menu. I can seldom resist fish tacos, and mine were delivered fast, hot, and fresh. But while our plates were packed with food, the group agreed that none of our orders were exceptionally tasty. Our server was great and I left Amigo Joe's stuffed like a piniata, but the food itself could use some more flavor.

I am reluctantly giving this place 3 stars. My son knows the owners and I wanted to like this place as well as their other one but...no cigar. The margarita was not bad, very little salt on the rim, but otherwise OK. The chips were a bit stale but the salsa was good. We ordered and I got carne asada, which was ok but far too salty for me. The bf got steak chimichangus and said the meat was too tough. Service was very good and it seemed like a friendly alive place. Large portions with fair entree's...sorry...

We were excited to go to Amigo Joe's - bc every time we drove out to Ted Drewes...we would see Amigo Joe's. So, today, we finally went to check it out. Being originally from Southern Cali - I was craving Mexican grub.... When we walked in, it was great! They were speaking Spanish and the place looked "authentic". The service was also excellent and attentive! Very commendable! The food was okay. I am comparing this to all the great Mexican food in Cali. I ordered Chili Verde and my husband ordered Carne Asada Tacos. The taste of the food was alright - no complaints, but not totally to die for. The ultimate margarita was also strong (at least for me, but I am not much of an alcohol drinker - getting tipsy after a few sips). We would probably go back to eat at this place and bring a couple friends next time :o) Lastly, if it is your birthday, they will sing to you (in English)...it wasn't our birthday but a woman at another table. They also made her wear a sombrero!

Amigo Joe's caters to a lot of different crowds, which is great for a place that skirts the tourist tr-- ahem, "popular" places on the hill. Every time we've been in there, there's a solid mix of families, old/young couples, and a few girls' night out tables taking advantage of their all-day happy hours at the start of the work week. We don't go during their peak times because it's not as close to us as other places, but we've never waited for a table, and always found a parking spot on the side of Southwest, or in their lot on the corner of Southwest/Hampton, about a 2 min walk. The first thing that always comes to mind about Amigo Joe's is the portion size. Whether it's a chimichanga, fajitas (single order) or pollo ranchero (my favorite), I've always left with lunch for the next day. If you're the kind of person who gets a foot-long sub and it lasts you two meals, you could probably eat for a week with some of the platters here. They have a white cheese dip (authentic or not, it's good) that drives us to order the nachos (with beef or chicken, both are solid) before our meal every time. They also use it in some of the entrees, as well. If you've eaten it at Chimmy's, you'll eat it here. (Frankly, you could say that about most everything on the menu.) The service has been a little hit-or-miss for us. Such is the problem with a lot of family owned places--the staff always seems to be one or two people short, so small things like drink refills and clearing the table take a little longer than we're used to. However, if a bus boy or the cashier/host sees you looking around, they're pretty good about seeing that you get your refills. On our most recent trip, they had been hit with a small rush right before we got there, so the guy who sat us also waited on us, and he was great. It's a place where the staff work for their tips; they don't just expect their 18%. As others have said, the decor is an aquired taste, but I like to think that letting someone's 3rd grade class fingerpaint the restaurant helps keep costs down. Sure enough, every time we go to pay the cashier, I look at the total (and at the 2 meals worth of leftovers were carrying home) and I can't believe how cheap it is.

I do not get all the positive reviews of this place. Maybe my experience was an aberration. The people claiming this place matches up with California Mexican cuisine puzzle me the most. If that's the case then I'm not impressed with Mexican food out west. I drove by this place a couple dozen times and finally stopped in one night while wanting a quick meal. The service was practically nonexistent. My food came late, cold, scarcely edible, and just overall extremely bland food. I'm a large guy who loves him some Mexican food and this may be the first and only time I ever ate less than half of my food at a place like this. I won't be back.

When it comes to Mexican food you don't usually have to high of expectations. Mostly, it's nice to have hot food with some spiciness, free chips and salsa and a decent margarita. All that and keep the plates under $10. On all those fronts Amigo Joe's succeeds. The food was hot, moderately spicy, the chips and salsa were free and they had a decent margarita. The Margarita had just barely enough salt and looked as though the glass had been sloshed around quite a bit before arriving at the table as it was a bit sticky as well. The Salsa was a highlight. Fresh cilantro and onion was visible when poured into the dipping bowl. The chips were pretty average, nothing to write home about. The entree's left a lot to be desired. I tried the Carne Asada with didn't taste like Carne Asada at all. It was steak, but it was tough and had very little flavor. I also tried a couple of the dishes around me and the only thing that seemed to have any real flavor was the Steak Chimichangas. Overall, I'd go back if others were insistent. It's not a bad place, just nothing really stood out enough to make me want to seek it out another time. And with endless amounts of good cheap mexican in town, it's hard to justify going for a very basic cheap meal at this place when there are other better options. I would also like to say that I was unimpressed with the service. The waitress just seemed like she was in a rush and barely took the time to listen to our order. It reflected later when one of us was brought the wrong dish. Not a huge deal, but just a bit of a turn off.

Not the best Mexican I've ever had, but it still hits the spot. Also, the strongest margaritas in town. A very fun atmosphere with attentive servers.

I knew I'd like this place when I walked through the door to see that the decor was like 400 bags of skittles had an orgy... in Mexico. It's colorful, festive, and happy. Just the sort of atmosphere that blends perfectly with margaritas, Coronas, and yes delicious Americanized Mexican food. That's not to say the food was bad. By most Mexican restaurants in areas with not many Mexican-standards it was very good. The quesadillas and the salsa are especially delicious. My enchillada was very flavorful as well. The service was pretty good and very friendly. I was satisfied and will definitely return.

What I look for in a Mexican restaurant may differ from others, so let me preface with that. I like a good margarita, good salsa, and spacious enough for gatherings. This place offers all that. One of e better margaritas around this area, and happy hour specials make them pretty affordable. The salsa is good too- not the best in the world, but fresh and a god flavor. The food is good here too. It's not going to blow anyone away, and if you are looking for something other than Tex Mex this may not be the right place. But I've always been happy with the quality and quantity. Coupled with a fun decorated interior and a pretty good sized patio for those nice summer days, this restaurant is definitely worth a try

Our friends have been raving about Amigo Joe's on the Hill for some time so my husband and I decided to give it a try. We have other Mexican restaurants closer to us such as El Maguey. I don't see the attraction of Amigo Joe's. I have to agree with other reviews it is not the best Mexican food in St. Louis. It is just average Mexican (American) food. Same food you can get at El Maguey. Food was just average. No special flavors. They had a flyer for a Skinny Margarita which is the same mix you can buy at any grocery store, so your Margarita is coming out of a prepared mix. If you go to Amigo's in Kirkwood, each Marganita is hand mixed as you order it. We would prefer to go out of our way to Amigo's in Kirkwood, Chava's in Soulard or the Hacienda in Rock Hill.

The reason for the low rating is simply that the quality of food is not restaurant standard. It was similar to a Mexican frozen dinner I would get at the grocery store. The burrito was the size of a slightly fatter taquito and had ground beef not shredded beef. My meal cost over $40 to feed a family of 4 and I could have made much better food myself at home with ingredients from the store. Not a chance I would ever go back here again. Now I'm from Phoenix with a plethora of excellent Mexican food, so maybe this is the norm for Mexican cuisine in St. Louis.

This place has excellent cheap Mexican food. Service is fast. Margaritas are good. The fajitas are our go to. Plenty of food for a meal for two really.

I'm really not sure what the hell is going on with this place. I used to love it, but during my past five visits, I have been all but impressed. The service has been horrible 4/5 times, and the portions have gotten smaller. How disappointing! Especially considering the fact that I highly doubt that Amigo Joe's is working in partnership with the U.S. government to correct the problem of portion distortion in the country - I think they're just being cheap. I waited for 30 minutes for grilled chicken nachos the other day ... yes, 30 minutes. I'm currently looking into other Mexican spots.

Below average service. Average food. Average drinks. We never got our salsa refilled or our chips after asking 3 times. It was a Saturday at 130 pm and there were maybe 3 other tables. Paid 5 bucks for a chorizo cheese dip that was the best thing we ate but it was 5 bites for both of us each. The waiter just kept running away after he stopped to pick up an empty plate so we couldn't ask for anything. VERY similar to Chimchangas. The "ultimate margarita" is actually a small marg, not filled to the rim, with half tequila half other liquor thrown in. Im pretty sure my chicken was turkey. Guacamole was brown.

We came here with my cousin and his girlfriend for a casual and quick dinner in Dogtown. I'd never visited Amigo Joe's before, and considering we both like Mexican food and wanted a chill, relaxed atmosphere to catch up with my cousin, it seemed like the perfect idea for dinner. The food was good, though nothing great or special. I was pleasantly surprised by the salsa, which was spicy and flavorful. We ordered the Texas fajitas for 2, which were served with chicken, beef and shrimp. We expected one tray of fajitas with the fixings, and were very happy to see that we each received our own trays of steaming hot fajitas. The chicken and steak were good, and the vegetables were sizzling and seasoned well. The shrimp, however, were overcooked and rubbery. Regardless, the food was good and the margaritas were cheap and tasty, so we'd return the next time we're in St Louis looking for some Mexican food. BTW, the 4 of us ate for under $50, including margaritas. Not bad at all!

I used to visit Amigo Joes weekly and was always very impressed. I've noticed very recently that the prices have increased. This doesn't bother me because I do realize that over time this will happen. What does bother me is that the service has gone down significantly. The waiters/waitresses are not friendly and it seems to take much longer then normal to get things when they aren't busy at all. My husband and I went there the other night and were there for probably close to two hours. Our waters weren't refilled one time. We did have margaritas but our waiter should have been more attentive. We also ordered guacamole when he took our drink order and didn't get that for almost twenty minutes. It's unfortunate because we love the food and my husband LOVES the fried chicken. I guess we'll be looking for a new Mexican restaurant.

Amigo Joes is a great place for dinner or happy hour. I have been there several times and I have left satisfied almost every time! The salsa and chips are delicious and the service is always really fast. The food is delicious, I would say even better than El Pasiano. The pricing is amazing as well. The one con I have for Amigo Joe's are watered down drinks. I always get a margarita and a beer (to make my own beergarita) and that fixes that problem, but it is a little ridiculous that you could be paying for margs all night and not even feel a buzz. Overall, this is a reliable place for dinner and happy hour. Nothing out of the ordinary but nothing bad.

My daughter and I found this little Mexican jewel and loved it. I had the beef fajitas and she had the taco salad, both good. Salsa and chips, iced teas refilledbefore we asked. And the large margaritas were only $1.00 each, very tasty. Next trip we're trying the fried chicken (spicy for me and regular for my daughter) that comes highly recommended. We were there at about 3 in the afternoon on a Monday and were served promptly by a friendly waitress. Only a short wait for the food, and it was piping hot when served. All in all, a good experience. Will definitely return.

[[ PROS ]] + "Party room" in the back great for large groups + Fast, efficient service + Tasty, albeit unauthentic food + Cheap drinks [[ CONS ]] - Watered-down mixed drinks For what it's worth, Amigo Joe's did a great job handling our 20-person rowdy crowd. Making reservations for a Saturday night for a group of 20 was quick and painless, and by the time we got there, they had already set up a long stretch of tables, and chips+salsa were already on the table. The waitstaff was accommodating in helping us move tables/chairs around to suit our preferences and I appreciate that they did a great job taking everyone's drink and food orders quickly. The food is tasty but obviously not authentic by any means. The menu has a ton of options with choices for everyone. Most items are fairly cheap, which makes Amigo Joe's a good crowd-pleasing option especially if you have a big group. I liked my CARNE ASADA CHIMICHANGA, but it was not the best I've had. Definitely ask for a little bowl of their habanero hot sauce. It was the best part of my meal. But use sparingly. It will burn your tongue off and make you cry if you foolishly douse without a taste test. Chips and salsa can be refilled upon request. $16.99 will get you a 64oz pitcher of blended margarita/daquiri. That's pretty cheap in my book, but cheap is where the good stuff ended. The margarita was impossible to pour from the pitcher because it was blended with too much ice and not enough liquid, let alone alcohol. Amigo Joe's perfectly demonstrates how you can have a drink that's simultaneously too icy and watered down. Perhaps you should go for beers here instead. I was not pleased that separate checks were not an option to our group, hence it took us almost 30 minutes for each person to settle their portion of the bill at the front register, but the girl at the register did do as good of a job as she could tracking down each person's order and ringing us all up.

Amigo Joe's is a nice little "Americanized" Mexican Restaurant with a colorful atmosphere. I feel like it's important to distinguish between Americanized and Authentic because we all have different tastes and preferences. If you prefer authentic, then this is probably a 2 or 3 star place and you might want to look to Cherokee Street, but if you like Tex-Mex/Gringo grub, then this place rates above average with a 4 to 5 star rating. The complementary chip basket has always been filled and refilled with warm chips when I visit Amigo Joe's. They actually have one of my favorite mild salsas in the city. It's a delicious red salsa with lots of cilantro and onion in it. The chips are good, but much thinner than what I prefer, often breaking when trying to scoop salsa, guacamole or beans. I've only tried a few menu items here. The shrimp chimichanga plate comes with not one, but two of these deep fried burritos! Stuffed with beans and shrimp, at a price of about $9, it's a good deal. The outer crust of these hotties were nice, flaky and not overcooked. I'm not a chimichanga expert, but it wasn't bad, and since they give you two, you can always take one home to have for lunch the next day. Another dish that I tried was some sort of chicken breast or "pollo" dish with a shrimp and/or veggies on top...I guess it just wasn't that memorable, but I do remember the chicken being juicy and tender. I've found excellent service from the waiters, especially on my last visit with a group of 9 people when the waiter had no problem keeping drinks and chip baskets filled. Another bonus with large groups is that they will happily split the check at the front register without the slightest objection. Overall, I'm going with a good 3 stars for great salsa, good service and above average food when compared to other TexMex-ish restaurants.

Food was great ! Problem was that we joined friends after they ate at the bar. My friend and I waited almost 30 minutes before he got upset (side note 4 people came behind the bar and talked to us) no help till friend got rude . Order only 2 go!!!!! This is like the 6th bad experience

Probably the worst Mexican food in St Louis. Salt, salt and no flavor. Service was mediocre and obnoxious. The chips were good.

  • mister m.

Except for the fried chicken amigo joes is just another soulless Mexican joint serving cheap, St. Louis style Mexican food. What's the deal? Do they all buy their menus from the same print shop? Cheese dip on everything-check. Thin tasteless chips served with equally tasteless salsa-check. Margaritas that taste nothing of real lime or lemon-check. The beans and rice were served lukewarm. The atmosphere is low rent but not in a cool, divey, velvet painting kind of way- it's bright and garish, decorated with touristy tacky Mexican knick knacks. Kind of looks like something a jerk-off Parrot Head would come up with if they were tasked with decorating a Mexican restaurant. Habenero fried chicken was good and the only reason I would go back again. It was succulent and the crust sort of resembled kfc with a kick of cayenne. A total bargain at $9 and it takes awhile because it's cooked to order, so go easy on the Flavorless chips and salsa.

*disclaimer, I am a fan of traditional Mexican fare, not tex mex* Ok, disclaimer aside, this place is kinda gross. The fajitas my wife had tasted like home made stir-fry, not ya know, grilled fajitas. If you can't nail fajitas....you know you're going to have a bad time The stuff I got was kinda bland. Mushy meats devoid of seasonings encased in basic flavorless tortillas, topped with runny cheese soup. The extra star is for the salsa. The only thing that I found enjoyable up in here. Amigo joes, no mas.

  • S. W.

They have amazing fried chicken here!!!! It comes original and habanero. It's an incredible value at $8.50 for dinner which includes a leg, thigh, breast and wing with 2 sides. The sangria is also very good at $3.99 a glass. I also like the unlimited chips and salsa. Thanks to the article in Sauce, I found a new chicken spot. Unfortunately I wouldn't order anything else here besides drinks and fried chicken. The fish tacos here are absolutely disgusting and foul. The chicken fajitas are just OK.

  • kyle L.

I'll only say this; their mexican fare is not stunning. However, they offer the best fried chicken in THIS town, and for that, 5 stars is necessary, if not imperative. It's breathtaking, easily the habanero batter has all the crunch and spice I ever need. Freshly dropped per order, a half chicken pressure fried and with 2 sides? 8$? Enough said. And wash it down with a 5$ top shelf margarita? No frills, good service, and that's all I need. Cheers, guys. Just don't change a thing!

  • Melanie D.

I'll give them 1 star for the food because it was decent. The service however was horrendous. It's not like they were busy either. There were only 2 other people in there besides the two of us. The hostess was extremely rude. We asked to be sat where we could see the baseball game and you would've thought I asked for a million dollars! Total attitude! We had to ask for chips and salsa to be brought to our table. We were never offered refills on our drinks either. Then upon leaving I had the check and the money on the counter but was looking for the change which was only five cents and I said here I have the 5 cents. She rolled her eyes at me then rang the sale up again and kept making ughhhh noises then put my $3 on the counter. I will never be back!!!!! I'm not going to pay people to be rude!!!

Food was great. The fish taco sauce was awesome! Rice and beans were very good. Bub had the habenero fried chicken. Said it was good, but parts of the crust were "as hard as a rock." Service was outstanding! Our waitress made sure that we understood the chicken would take 20 minutes.

  • Lydia L.

Why would you come here if you could go to Cherokee street and get more authentic, better tasting food? Our experience here was fine. This is not too different from your average Mexican food chain. The waiter seemed a bit overwhelemed, and he told us that the chef quit recently, so some of the special dishes were not available. All of the waitstaff put forth a lot of effort, and they were really helpful, but the food was mediocre at best. Quesadillas, burritos, soup were all not very impressive. The cheese dip came out cold...twice. I hope their chef comes back, and they can start turning the kitchen around.

Amigo Joe's Mexican has an American chicken place right next door. It's not your typical chicken, it's Pressure Cooked Fried Chicken. The seasoning is fairly good and the pieces are on the large side. The meals come 2,3 & 4 pieces and include two sides and a biscuit. The biscuit was more of a dinner roll in my opinion. They offer eight different sides; corn, green beans, baked beans, vinegar & oil cole slaw, creamy sweet cole slaw, country mustard potato salad, creamy mayonnaise potato salad and mashed potatoes with brown or country gravy. They don't hide the fact that some of the sides are Orval Kent products that are available from most major food distributors. After all, the containers are right in view in the glass door ice boxes. The mashed potatoes were the best I've had from a fast fried chicken joint and I liked the fact that you can choose your gravy. Give me white gravy, I have never understood the brown gravy you get at KFC. Another bonus, for a couple more bucks you can name your pieces, I love my white meat and it's worth it for me. It's close to home, so when I'm craving chicken I'll re-visit Amigo Joe's Chicken.

My boyfriend and I were aimlessly driving around one Sunday looking for a place to eat, and my Yelp app found Amigo Joe's for me. AH! I just read the review that says the owners are the same here as Chimichangas. I was definitely going to lead with, I LOVE the atmosphere at both places. I feel like I've been transported far, far, away from the humidity and stickyness of a St. Louis summer and right into a warm, breezy Mexico. That being said, I did notice the menus were very similar. I ordered the seafood fajitas (after having food envy at Chimichangas on the same dish.) and I enjoyed the salsa, I'm not too picky on salsa unless it's way tomato-y or way onion-y. I am so burned out on St. Louis Mexican food, but this was good, the amount of food we got with the fajitas was crazy, we did not have a big enough table! The service was good, there weren't but 3 tables in the whole restaurant. I was surprised that they were so empty, but it was not lunch rush hour either. Their 2 year anniversary is June 23, and they are having a block party! I'm trying to get there for it!

We go there at least twice a month. The food is unbelievably good, the drinks are cheap and very very well made and we are treated like royalty! I remember when we first started going there back in the day we could hang out for hours drinking, eating chips, eating food and the bill would arrive. It would be 30 to 33 dollars! Well I'm happy to say not much has changed because the bill nowadays is not really that much more . My girlfriend always gets the chili con queso y carne or the chicken quesadilla and I generally get the fajitas or a chimichanga. Man is that food delicious! I highly recommend Amigo Joe's!!!

Authentic Mexican food at it's finest! Staff is so-so...most of the time they are perfect but every once in a while, they change the prices of things or don't understand your order, the food is out of this world and they can have a 5 family dinner out within 10 to 5 minutes, very kid friendly, prices are unmatched!!! Love Amigo Joe's!!!

I am x-posting this from "Chimichanga" because these two establishments are run by the same people and have identical menus, and similarly excellent staff!! A friendly warning: Amigo Joe's is not the best Mexican food ever. It is barely even authentic. However, Amigo Joe's is my 2nd favorite St. Louis establishment for Mexican, and first favorite for price. I usually get the "Special Dinner" which comes with more items than I can remember, on two huge plates. I would not call myself a glutton, but I do like to leave a place feeling full, and Amigo Joe's does the trick. Their margaritas are excellent as well. Everyone I've ever taken here has had a great time, including my aunt who used to own and head-chef at a Mexican restaraunt in Colorado. Amigo Joe's gets my vote for good!

  • Caoimhe N.

Amigo Joe's is pretty much what I think of when I think of Mexican (Tex Mex) food. This is not high-brow Mexican and not Taco Bell. It sits comfortably in the middle; it's tasty, cheap, and very local. Service is generally very good, and the one time we were left alone for a little longer than usual, we were instantly given free appetizers. Their chips are some of the best I've had at a Mexican restaurant; tasty and they keep them coming. I also love their guacamole! All the meals I have tried there have been good, solid, decent meals for a great price. Also, in summer, they have a great outdoor seating area!

I came here on a Monday night for dinner and some de-stressing. Atm: Interesting whimsical eclectic decor. Food: I ended up getting the grilled fish tacos, which I wouldn't get again. The fish was dry and flavorless. I added the beans and rice to my tacos which provided most if not all of the flavor. The chips and salsa were good, but it could have been because I was super hungry. I would come back to try other dishes, but not the grilled fish taco. Drinks: 2.25 Happy hour margaritas, which were pretty potent and delicious? Bring me more! This is probably what saved them from getting a lower star rating. Would I come here again? Probably to try other food options, but definitely for the happy hour prices. In the meanwhile if I find somewhere better Yelp will definitely know about it.

Cheap, good Mexican food. When we have a hankering for Mexican food, Amigo Joe's is always near the top of our list. There's nothing stellar about the place. It's good. It's cheap. They have complimentary chips and salsa which I could eat my weight in (and I'm a big dude). I have yet to eat outside on the patio, as every time I've gone it's either been raining or too cold to sit outside. But soon... soon...

We had our first Amigo Joe's experience last week. It is currently the closest location (from our new home) for delicious Mexican food. We were definitely pleased with our decision. The interior is certainly vibrant. It was a cool night for a change so we opted to sit outside, which was nice. The atmosphere is very laid back. The servers and staff were very pleasant and helpful. The service itself was also fine & dandy. We did not have to wait long for our drinks, food, and check by any means. Our server was super nice and definitely on the ball. I loved their salsa - definitely more heat and flavor than some of the other Mexican establishment. The food was ok. I ordered one of the various combos, which consisted of one relatively bland enchilada. The tacos were tasty, though. That being said - I am willing to give the food another chance in the near future. I also need to give their margaritas a whirl as well. Overall - it's definitely worth at least three stars, and I'm sure we will be back soon considering the location and fact that it's extremely cost efficient.

I have been to Amigo Joe's 4 times and each time the service has gotten worse. the food has been good, the drinks were good but the service! The wait staff has been rude and inattentive! Last time there, we finished our meal and suddenly the waitress came and told us if we were done eating we had to leave! The place was not busy but I said okay, we needed our check. We sat there for another 10 minutes and a different waitress told us we had to leave! I told her we had not been given our check! She walked off and suddenly the manager was at our table telling us we had already been given a check! I told her we certainly had not been when our original waitress walked over with our check and said something to the manager in Spanish, which I do not speak, and they both walked away. So, we just went to the front, paid our bill and left! I felt they were rude and will not be returning.

I like this place. The food is decent, and the waitress was attentive. Plus, it's the really eye-rape-y sort of Mexican restaurant decor that I enjoy. I want to go back, but definitely not if I'm hungover, unless I'm wearing sunglasses. pros: decor neutral: food

As a transplant from Southern California, if there is cuisine that I a most comfortable/familiar with it would have to be Mexican! I was practically raised on Mexican food...the test for me of a good Mexican Restaurant is how they prepare their Carne Asada...the only question I ask myself is..."If this was a restaurant in California, would it last?" The answer to this question at Amigo Joe's is yes. For ambiance, service and Carne Asada, yes! Their Carne Asada is tender, juicy, flavorful and perfectly seasoned! They are always willing to accommodate any special request. These are the two things I special order: Tacos de Carne Asada - no pico de gallo, add cilantro, onions & hot sauce - My FAve! Burrito El Camino - no lettuce - meat, cheese, hot sauce, refried beans, cheese dip & guacamole - Delish!!

Considering we went on the weekend of Cinco de Mayo, they handled the crowd really well. We could hear a huge group in the next room over from where we were seated, and there were several large groups in the same room as us. We were still seated and served quickly. The servers were fast and attentive. I had the shrimp fajita and it was really good. The portion was a good size for the money. I also had the fried ice cream, which I loved. It was really loud and hard to hear, but I'm attributing that to the fact that it was Cinco de Mayo weekend. Also, one teeny tiny barely notable gripe was that the lime wedges served with my beers were a little dried out and it was hard to squeeze any juice out of them. More of a pet peeve than a negative. One cute thing for families was that there was a guy going around making balloon art.

Been to Amigo Joe's several times in the past and decided to return this past Saturday for lunch. Like the location and they even have a patio area outside to sit on beautiful days. I always get the same dish - enchelatas suprema and it didn't disappoint either. Their chips/salsa are good, service is usually very good - offer patio dining as well as indoor dining. If you want a great cheap Mexican meal . . . you need to visit Amigo Joe's at 5901 Southwest Avenue - South of I-44 off Hampton!

Took the family to Amigo Joes for lunch last Saturday. If you're picky about having authentic Mexican, you might just want to try a taqueria on Cherokee or in Woodson Terrace, but it you're looking for a standard "Americanized" Mexican meal, you could do much worse. It's a nicely decorated, clean restaurant that reminded me a lot of Chimichanga. Afterward I found out they have the same owner. This place is more polished than their first place, but based on one visit, it appears to be serving about the same quality food. We tried the chicken fajitas and a chicken fajita salad. Both were pretty okay. The rice was surprisingly tasty, which is a rare occurence as far as I'm concerned. Chips and salsa were also quite good. Service was friendly and prompt, and they actually had a very nice TV for watching the basketball game. Parking is iffy, like most places on the Hill. If you're a fan of Chimichanga, El Maguey and other such places, there's a good chance you'll like Amigo Joe's, too. Among these types of restaurants, this might be the nicest. Since there's not much Mexican type food I don't like - Americanized or not - it's AOK with me.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate.
